How Much Does a Truck Dispatcher Cost in Illinois?

Reviewed by the Bonafide Dispatch Team · Updated September 30, 2026

A truck dispatch service in Illinois usually costs a percentage of each load it books. A former dispatcher told Overdrive most of her loads carried a 6–7% fee, and she saw cuts as high as 10–12%. We found no Illinois-only pricing, but Illinois tolls and diesel tax change your math.

01 · Fee models

How Truck Dispatchers Charge: Percentage, Flat Fee or Per Load

You'll get quoted one of three ways. How the fee is built matters as much as the number.

  • Percentage of gross

    How it works
The dispatcher takes a cut of each load they book
    Who it suits
    Carriers whose weekly revenue swings
    Watch out for
What the percentage is charged on (see the Example below)
  • Flat fee

    How it works
A fixed amount per truck, per week
    Who it suits
Trucks that run every week at high mileage
    Watch out for
You still pay when the truck sits for repairs or weather
  • Per-load fee

    How it works
A fixed dollar charge on each booked load
    Who it suits
Carriers running a few long, high-revenue loads
    Watch out for
    Add-on charges stacked on top

02 · Scope

What to Confirm Is in the Fee — and What's Billed Extra

Get the scope in writing before your first load.

Confirm it's included:

  • Finding loads on load boards and through brokers
  • Negotiating the rate before you see the rate con
  • Broker setup paperwork
  • Check calls while you're under load
  • Following up on detention and TONU pay you're owed

Ask about separately:

  • Factoring: your factoring company bills this. Confirm the dispatcher takes no cut.
  • Quick pay (the broker pays early, for a fee): confirm the dispatcher takes no share.
  • Invoicing, IFTA filing, bookkeeping: ask whether they're included or billed on top.
  • Setup fees: ask before you send any documents.
03 · Example math

Linehaul vs. Gross: Example Math on One Illinois Load

Some dispatchers charge on linehaul, the rate without fuel. Others charge on the all-in total, which includes the fuel surcharge (FSC). Same load, different bill.

Example

Example — hypothetical 6% fee from public ranges. Not Bonafide's fee.

Dry van, 800 loaded miles, DAT national averages for August 2026:

Flat vs. percentage (Example): a $300 flat fee per week costs the same as a 6% fee when your truck grosses $5,000 that week ($300 ÷ 0.06). Gross less and the flat fee costs more. Gross more and it costs less.

Example break-even: a $300 flat fee per week equals 6% of a $5,000 week$5,000 gross weekGross lessflat fee costs moreGross moreflat fee costs less

Results vary. Example figures are illustrations, not quotes or guaranteed rates.

The fee only pays off if your net revenue per mile rises by more than you pay. Rates move monthly, so run your own gross in the dispatch fee calculator.

04 · Illinois factors

What Drives Truck Dispatch Service Cost in Illinois

A dispatcher's percentage doesn't change with the state. Your Illinois operating costs do, and they decide whether a load is worth booking.

Tolls and fuel tax change the math, not the dispatcher's percentage.

Deadhead. Deadhead (empty) miles to your next pickup still burn fuel and pay tolls. Count them before you judge any rate, whether you dispatch yourself or pay someone. Use the cost-per-mile calculator and the deadhead cost calculator.

05 · Red flags

Hidden-Fee Red Flags to Catch Before You Sign

Walk away, or get it fixed in writing, if you see:

  • A fee due before any load is booked
  • A percentage on detention, TONU or lumper (unloading) pay, which is money for your lost time
  • A percentage on the fuel surcharge that nobody disclosed
  • A cut of your quick-pay or factoring fee
  • Per-load "admin" charges on top of the percentage
  • No written answer on what the fee is charged on: gross, linehaul or all-in
  • You never see the broker's original rate con
  • The "dispatcher" collects shipper money or picks which carrier hauls a load. FMCSA says that can require broker authority. See how a dispatcher differs from a broker.
  • No registered business behind the name. Search it free on the Illinois Secretary of State business search, or the home state's SOS for out-of-state firms.

Fees are one check; here are contract and broker-authority checks.

08 · FAQ

Illinois Dispatch Cost FAQs

Do Illinois dispatchers charge more than dispatchers in other states?

We found no Illinois-only dispatch pricing in the published rates we checked. What does change in Illinois is your operating cost: tolls, Midwest diesel prices and the state fuel tax.

Is the dispatch fee charged on linehaul or on the total?

It depends on the dispatcher, so get it in writing. Some charge on linehaul only. Others charge on the all-in total, including fuel surcharge and accessorials. On our Example 800-mile load at a 6% Example fee, the difference was $33.60.

Should a dispatcher take a percentage of detention or TONU?

Ask before you sign, and get the answer in the agreement. Detention and TONU pay you for lost time, not miles run. A percentage on them raises what you really pay without changing the headline rate.

Is a dispatch fee taxed in Illinois?

No. The Illinois Department of Revenue says Illinois does not tax sales of service, and dispatching is a service. Check your own situation with a CPA.

Do I pay if my truck sits?

With a percentage fee, you usually pay nothing on weeks you don't haul. With a flat fee charged by the week, you usually still pay. With Bonafide, you pay only on loads we book.

What should a dispatch fee include?

Get a written list before your first load. Confirm load finding, rate negotiation, broker setup paperwork, check calls, and detention and TONU follow-up. Ask separately about factoring, quick pay, invoicing and IFTA filing.
